There are three universities in the area – The Open University, Buckingham University and Cranfield University. Luton University, and De Montfort (Bedford) are also nearby.

In a collaborative project, the Open University, De Montfort University, the University of Luton, the University of Northampton and Milton Keynes College are developing Universities for Milton Keynes (UMK). This project, is already offering courses with a broad range of qualifications to 700 students.

There are 12 secondary schools each one offering up to 1500 places (with Ousedale offering 1800 places and Stantonbury offering 2500 places), all offer post-16 provisions. Milton Keynes has 91 Primary schools, 6 specialist schools, 4 pupil referral units and 3 Nursery Schools in the area.

Most of the schools have specialist status: one for performing and creative art, maths and computing and vocational education, one for modern foreign languages and humanties (English); one for business and enterprise; one for maths and ICT; one for science; one for sport; and two for technology. The two new secondary schools have specialist status planned for Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities. Another school is bidding for Sports College status and the Academy plans to bid for Business & Enterprise and one other.

In September 2005 – 4 new schools opened Oakgrove School and The Hazeley School (both the first phases of 1500 place secondary schools); Oxley Park Primary School and St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School (Monkston Park)

There are approximately 37,000 pupils ages 4-19 in Milton Keynes’ maintained schools; 19,250 primary school pupils and 14,000 secondary school pupils. There are 1,000 pupils in Nursery Schools.

Milton Keynes College is the largest provider of further education and training in Milton Keynes and North Buckinghamshire, with three main centres and numerous outreach facilities across the city, offering a wide range of courses and qualifications. The College provides sixth form, vocational, work based and degree level courses for some 15,000 students both full and part-time

Milton Keynes Resource Pack - Bury Lawn SchoolIn 2005, 1,400 pupils obtained 5 GCSE passes at Grades A-C (51.6% of the cohort). Over 900 Students took A levels scoring an average points score of 242.3 points.

Milton Keynes provides Primary and Secondary education with transfer taking place at the age of 11.

All Milton Keynes secondary schools have sixth forms.

As the city expands, so too does the education provision and a range of new schools open every year along with a range of courses for 14 – 19 year olds.
