Peter Pan A Review by Philip Shell

This is a fabulous night of pure magic, fun, excitement, colour, humour and energy. From the opening chords of the overture to the final notes at the end, this show has you clapping, singing and most importantly smiling. To see children being totally immersed in the action on stage is a most pleasing sight; but to see adults leading the way with the traditional rounds of “Oh no you don’t”, makes the evening even more special.
Henry Winkler played his roles with aplomb. A very nasty character portrayal of the fiendish Captain Hook was also beautifully crafted with some really good humour, which was delivered with exceptional timing and subtlety. How easy it would have been for him to over play his role, but that he did not. I would also like to take this opportunity to mention those wonderful words Henry gave at the end of the show when he addressed all the children in the audience. Those were words from the heart .
Louise Lytton proved to be a wonderful Peter Pan, who so obviously relished her leading boy role. She was Peter Pan and how she enjoyed her flying moments. Diminutive in stature but big in persona she was well and truly a match for Henry’s Hook.
Amanda Salmon gave a really good caricature performance as Wendy, with lots of subtle childish mannerisms to enhance her performance. Mention should also be made of all the children who acted without fear or nerves.
The adult chorus were strong both in dance and singing and what was most pleasing was that they all appeared to be enjoying what they were doing; something with transcended the footlights and into the audience.
Traditional pantomimes always revolve around the panto dame, but with Peter Pan there is no dame, and so it was left to the extremely funny Andy Ford as Smee to carry the flag. His camp portrayal of a pirate was hysterical and the moment he fell from the stage was so brilliantly executed that even now as I write this I find myself laughing.
The sets designed by Terry Parson were magnificent; colourful and bright and David Howe’s lighting design created ambience and depth to those sets.
The flying sequences had children gasping.
A very entertaining and enjoyable evening.

We went to see Peter Pan at Milton Keynes theatre on 23rd December, and although we did enjoy it, it fell far short of the truly wonderful Aladin which was at MK last year. That panto with Bradley Walsh was hilarious from start to finish, and was a very hard act to follow.
The first part of Peter Pan was actually boring, with the audience sitting in silence. Henry Winkler was very good as Captain Hook and so were his pirates and the 2nd half did get better. It did have most of the elements needed in a panto, with the booing and it's behind you etc. It was colourful and had good singers and dancers, and the part when children from the audience were on stage was so sweet and funny. Unfortunately of course there's no dame in Peter Pan.
Overall it wasn't bad, but the actor who played Smee needs to see Bradley Walsh in panto and learn a few tips as there needs to be more humour! On the way out we heard someone else comment it wasn't a patch on last years!

Thank you very much to everyone who made the Peter Pan in Milton Keynes!!! Well done. Everyone in our group had a good time. I enjoyed this panto no less if not more than my 6 year old daughter (who nearly wet her pants laughing). Done very professionally, clean humour - adults understood a few jokes that children perhaps (I hope) missed))) Nice to see children acting in panto too. Great costumes, great music, great dancing!
THANKS again!

Peter Pan is a classic Christmas pantomime although sadly not as glitzy as Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. However this production did score highly on the spectacular scenery and the great costumes. There was some good singing and dancing too.
We all know the classic tale of Peter Pan, the little boy who didn’t want to grow up. This part was played beautifully by the tiny Lousia Lytton, best known for her dancing in Strictly and her role of Ruby in Eastenders. Her petite form flew wonderfully well across the stage and she had the perfect physique to play the part of a young boy. She was wonderful with the kids
Henry Winkler of course was the celeb of the show. He had a real presence as Captain Hook, ad libbing niceley with Smee and the audience. Of course there was the classic Fonz moment too
For me Smee, played by Andy Ford, stole the show. He was a star from the minute he walked onto the stage, flirting with the audience, interacting with the kids and generally having a great time on stage which the audience could share. He was everything you could want from a pantomime funny man.
The other star was Nana, the man in a dogs costume. He stole the hearts of the audience and I’m sure all the kids would have loved to take him home
The first half of the show was more like a Christmas musical and I would have liked to see a bit more slapstick humour that you would expect from a Christmas pantomime. However the second half was a lot more interactive and fun. The scene where the four children were interviewed on stage was great. Andy Ford was fantastic with the kids and everyone was laughing along.

PRESS RELEASE

Legendary TV and film actor Henry Winkler will be the bad guy you love to hate this Christmas as he heads up the crew of dastardly pirates as the villainous Captain Hook hoping to steal the show in this year’s magical pantomime – Peter Pan

As one of the first American stars ever to be cast in a British pantomime by First Family Entertainment who produce the hugely successful show each year at Milton Keynes Theatre, Henry Winkler is delighted to be playing the perfect panto villain in the city this year - "Being in panto equals joy, and playing Captain Hook gives me joy. How great to share this fantastic adventure with the audience in Milton Keynes", he said.

Speaking about the announcement, Milton Keynes Theatre’s Chief Executive Elizabeth Adlington said “We are extremely privileged that such an iconic international star will be enjoying the family pantomime tradition here in Milton Keynes, and I look forward to welcoming him to our theatre”.

Making her panto debut alongside Henry is TV star Louisa Lytton, who will be flying high in the title role of Peter Pan. Best known for her critically acclaimed roles as gangster’s daughter Ruby Allen in BBC1’s Eastenders and more recently as the likeable PC Beth Green in ITV1’s long-running police drama The Bill, Louisa was also a much-loved participant on the BBC’s hit show Strictly Come Dancing.

She won the Sexiest Female award at the British Soap Awards in 2006 for her role in Eastenders, and this year took a break from The Bill to put her dancing shoes back on for the Strictly Come Dancing National Tour. She has also appeared in films such as Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets and Ali G In Da House.

Louisa said “I am so excited to be making my pantomime debut in Milton Keynes this Christmas, and what a way to start my panto career - playing Peter Pan which is such a great role and working with a brilliant cast. I never thought I would be sword-fighting with Henry Winkler!”

Hilarious comedian Andy Ford (Royal Variety Performance) also stars as Captain Hook’s silly sidekick Smee.

Peter Pan is the perfect adventure for kids, and adults who never never grew up, with stunning special effects, amazing flying, and dazzling sets! So grab a magical sprinkling of fairy dust and fly away to Neverland this Christmas as this magnificent and swashbuckling adventure comes to Milton Keynes Theatre from 5th December 2008 to 18th January 2009
